The World’s First AI Personal Trainer (Pre-GPT)
THE CHALLENGE:
6 years before ChatGPT, LifeBEAM raised $1.7 Million on Kickstarter to imbue their Harmon-Kardon engineered headphones with an adaptable AI that could tell you your stats and track improvements in real time, based on your biometrics, using an altimeter, an accelerometer, and an oximeter.
We called this new technology an Awareable™—the first and only wearable that’s aware of a person's activity patterns and able to coach their behavior in real time.
The challenge? Giving this AI trainer personality to provide real motivation—just like a real personal trainer.

How do you measure the quality of a personal trainer? Simple: results.
Real trainers know what motivates their clients,—how they think and feel, when they try hard and when they give up. Then they develop a regimen that pushes just hard enough to start breaking down barriers, and any good trainer will tell you: the real breakthroughs are always psychological.
VI combines collects data from aerospace-grade biosensors, allowing for real-time feedback and coaching that’s unique to a user's physiology, fitness level, and psychology.
So we used that same dataset to trigger a variety of emotional responses, based on users’ patterns and results, offering real-time insights on exhaustion level, stress management, adaptive training regimens, and more.

THE RESULT:
We created over 900 individual scripted communication nodes—each one delivered with a real human performance, and linked to the AI’s logic and data triggers.
Not only does VI know how you’re doing, she responds naturally to your voice prompts and enthusiastically when you succeed—she’s even up to date on her pop culture, making small talk and banter just like a human trainer.
The backend content may not look sexy, but when it comes to making people feel truly motivated to improve their health, I think it’s absolutely beautiful.
